Marshall, Alaska, September 24, 2018 –

The Village of Ohogamiut was awarded a grant from the Administration for Native Americans for  $407,461 to build the capacity of Ohog Incorporated to manage lands left to their stewardship for future generations and land reconveyance and community planning.  The people of the Village of Ohogamiut were forced from their tribal lands in the 1950’s, threatened with the loss of their children and imprisonment if they did not relocate to a village with a territorial school. Families left for Marshall, the nearest community with a school, 26 river miles away. Marshall was not set up to take in so many homeless families and Ohogamiut tribal members suffered a great deal. Through all of these years, the Ohogamiut tribe held their tribal identity. In 1971, they were declared a tribe and awarded a land settlement under ANCSA and formed the mandatory village corporation, Ohog Incorporated. The project will build the capacity of the corporation and conduct a land plan to determine the development for the traditional land.
